Ghostly Glossary
Picture
Apparition – A spirit in human form that’s usually visible to the naked eye.

Cold Spot – A physical space that feels cooler than its immediate surroundings.

Crisis Apparition – The projection of a person’s image close to the time of death or upon death, reportedly seen by acquaintances.

Demon – A non-human entity that is hostile toward humans.

Ectoplasm – Originally, a term used to describe a fluid substance coming from the eyes, nose, mouth or ears of a medium. Spirits used this fluid to assume an almost physical appearance. However, ectoplasm has more recently been used to describe ghost-like mists found in photographs.

Intelligent Haunting – When spirits dwell in a specific area and interact with those in the physical realm.

Orb – A spherical ball of light, often white, yellow, green or blue caught on video or camera. Orbs are often associated with spirit activity, and believed by many to be the source of energy or soul of a former living being.

Poltergeist – A German word that literally means "noisy ghost" used to describe a ghost or spirit that makes its presence known by moving objects and producing audible noises.

Residual Haunting – A haunting in which the entity shows no awareness of its surroundings, but instead appears to be a "re-play" of an event in its life. Such hauntings are not necessarily restricted to visual phenomena, but may also include, or be limited to, noises or smells.

Shadow People – Used to describe one of the most commonly reported apparitions. These entities appear as shadows, often with very few distinguishing features. They are usually sneaky and evasive. When they are spotted it's usually out of the corner of the eye or as they are darting through a wall.

Vortex / Vortices – A long streak in a photo caused by a high-speeding "orb." Some believe vortices are a gateway between both realms (physical and spiritual). They are usually white and may appear as a funnel-shape.
